Parish History

SS. Peter & Paul joyfully celebrated its 145th anniversary in 2004.The congregation of SS. Peter and Paul dates back to the year 1859 when a group of Germans from the Danish provinces of Schleswig and Holstein arrived and settled in the country around the present site of Kiel.  Catholic services were conducted in a little log school house.  The first log church, measuring 32' x 40', was built in 1859 and for 25 years it served well.  In 1878, a 30' x 60' structure was built.  The present structural size of 135' x 47' was built in 1914 at a cost of $45,000.  It has been refurbished several times, most recently this year.  The parish currently consists of approximately 710 family units.  Participation runs high in this active community, with many opportunities to participate in various groups and functions.
